Upcoming events
  • Farmer Tom's open morning, Woodside farm, Milton, January-April every other Saturday (7th, 21st March, 4th, 18th April), 11-1pm. Farm animals to see and feed and tractors. Muddy! So wear puddle suit and wellies. £5 per family, £2.50 if bought online in advance (recommended). Special lambing open day on 2nd May. Tickets £1.50 if booked online, £2 at door.
  • Preschool Picassos art classes at Denny Abbey farmland museum. A course of 4 x 45-minute sessions every Wednesday 29th April to 20th May 2015, 10.00-10.45am. For young artists aged 2 to 5 led by local artist and tutor: Ann Biggs. Price £15 for course of 4 sessions, (pre-booking essential).
  • Superworm trail at High Lodge no. Open 13th March to 31st October, 9am-6pm, £2.20 per hour. Activity pack £3.50 from High Lodge information. Trail approx 1 mile, suitable for ages 3-8 years.
  • Lamb in season at Church Farm. Bottle feed the lambs and calves. Lots of rare breed animals and babies to see and cuddle.

Things to see and do
  • Play parks - Waterbeach has 2 play parks. There is one on the rec (also a skate park, basketball court, tennis court and cricket nets) and one behind the Morris home development off Bannold Road. There are also 2 ride-on bouncy things on the grass opposite the pharmacy.
  • Milton Country Park - Lots of outdoor space, woods, play area and lakes with ducks. Seed for ducks is available to buy from the cafe. Free entry but parking £2. Often has special events for children, see website.
  • Scotsdales Garden Centre, Great Shelford - Fantastic Aquarium area, with low level tanks and viewing platform for toddlers to see the tropical fish. Feed the carp and goldfish for £2. Lots of space indoors and out. Excellent cafe, with very quick service and children's options. (Particularly good at Christmas, when extra attractions for children e.g. real reindeer, santa and anamatronic animals)
  • Scotsdales, Horningsea - Rabbits, guinea pigs and birds in the pet shop. Outdoor space to explore. Cafe has a corner with toys and has a children's menu.
  • Anglesey Abbey (National Trust) - Huge amount of space to explore - woods, meadow and formal gardens. Activities for slightly older children e.g. trails, activity sheets and an amazing tree house. Good food in the cafe. Adult £7.10 (garden only), members free. Often has special events for children, see website.
  • Wicken Fen (National Trust) - Boardwalk (buggy friendly) around interesting scenery with regular hides for watching the birds and other wildlife. Butterfly wood, river and meadows. Good cafe. Often has special events for children, see website.
  • Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey - Outdoor space, barns, abbey ruins. Toy shed, tractor and climbing frame. Education centre has children's activities and crafts. Special events for children. Adult £5, under 5s free. Ask about local season ticket for Waterbeach residents, unlimited visits £8.
  • Rectory Farm Shop, Milton - Goats, donkeys and other farm animals to see. Carp pond is worth the short walk  (very active fish!). Coin operated diggers and tractors. Maize Maze from July to Sept, when there is a fee to enter but many additional attractions for children eg tractor rides, crazy golf, go-karts and, of course, the maze.
  • Cambridge Botanic Gardens - Lots of outdoor space, grass maze and glasshouse. Cafe with homemade food. £5 Adults, children free. Season tickets available.
  • Miniature railway - Cambridge Model Engineering Society have a model railway in the Newnham district of Cambridge. They hold open days on the 2nd Sunday of each month between April and October where you can ride the train and see some unexpected things along the route. £1 per ticket, under 3's free.
  • Cheeky Monkeys Play Barn -  Fulbourn. Indoor soft play and outdoor, farm-based play area. £3.80 weekdays, £4.50 weekends and school holidays.
  • Emmaus coffee shop - just off the A10 near Landbeach/Cottenham. Light refreshments and cakes. Secondhand furniture shop (also clothes, books and small items) and an orchard/garden with chickens.
  • Library - several to choose from including Waterbeach, Cambridge (Lion Yard) and Cottenham.
  • Church Farm rare breeds centre, Stow Bardolph. Make friends with a wide variety of tame animals and experience all their young at close quarters throughout the season. Tickets £7.50 adult, £6.80 3-16yrs, £3.50 2yrs.
Food and Drink
  • Cottenham Community Coffee Shop - Lovely homemade cakes. Play corner with lots of toys to entertain a range of ages. Attached to Community Centre, which is the meeting place for various groups.
  • White Horse, Milton. Good Sunday lunch and child-friendly.
  • Lion and Lamb, Milton. Good food and excellent pirate ship play equipment in the garden.
  • John Lewis, Lion Yard - cafe on the 3rd floor has some lovely cakes, but the main attraction is the toilets! Parent Room (also 3rd floor) with lots of space for nappy changes, comfy seats for nursing and family toilet room with standard and child toilets and loads of room for a buggy.
